Alexandre Levy was a Brazilian composer and conductor, born on November 10, 1864, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He belonged to a prominent family of musicians, and his father, Francisco Manuel da Silva, was a famous composer in Brazil during the 19th century. Levy studied music in Belgium, France and Italy and became one of the first Brazilian musicians to be trained in the European musical tradition. He was a talented pianist and composer, and his music was influenced by the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Wagner. Among his major works are symphonies, chamber music, art songs, and piano pieces. Unfortunately, Alexandre Levy died young, at the age of 27, of tuberculosis, in 1892, leaving behind a brief but prolific legacy that is considered one of the most significant in Brazilian art music of the 19th century.
